With limited space for stock and work in progress, combined with double handling and easy access to raw materials, the requirement for a Cantilever Racking system was quickly becoming an essential and obvious investment for the business. After going through an extensive tender process Stakapal were awarded the contract which consisted of 13 Single Sided Racks dedicated to three different sizes of Sheet material.

Column heights were only 5500mm high, and with such a small combined pallet and product height the system was designed to accomodate 15 apertures which included the base of the column and 14 arm locations.

Edward Ashworth, Manufacturing Manager comments “There was very little difference in the prices obtained from those who quoted, and whilst the Stakapal price was competitive it was the advanced structural design of their Cantilever Racking system that sealed it for us.”

Stakapal were extremely accommodating and a visit to an existing client of theirs only reaffirmed my thoughts, as the installation I was taken to incorporated varying types of Cantilever profiles and clearly demonstrated that we had committed to the right product.”

The Wickham site – which is a milling, manufacturing and design facility as well as providing the services of a more traditional branch, is responsible for producing I-beams, Trussed rafters and Easi joists.

The new shed replaced an existing building that had seen better days and had typically been used for bulk storage of timber packs. This in itself, had been a limiting factor for the business in terms of selectivity, stock rotation and damage to products.

Stakapal were asked to provide a storage installation that would fully utilise the benefits of the storage space created within the new shed, as a result of installing Stakapal’s Cantilever Racking.

The installation consisted of two single sided runs, 24 metres long, positioned on the perimeter walls, with 3 double sided runs 18 metres long, separated by 4 metre aisles allowing generous access for the multi directional and side loading trucks.

This latest project is an addition to the other Cantilever Racking installations that Stakapal have previously installed at the Wickham site. These include : an external system complete with a canopy roof, and other internal racks that assist the manufacturing operation directly.

At their Bulwell site in Nottingham the company decided to take the opportunity of increasing their range of timber stock, but presentation, storage and selectivity of an expanding product portfolio was fundamental in ensuring that the company’s profile was appropriately raised.

Russell Ostrowsky-Weston, The Group Operations Director’s initial approach to Stakapal came about by means of a recommendation. His past experience of Cantilever Racking had been when he had purchased a system manufactured from structural steel sections which within a relatively short period of time had generated high maintenance issues and costs as well as related health and safety implications, not forgetting very poor and awkward adjustability.

The location of the Bulwell site on a busy main road and the layout of the yard enabled Stakapal to supply and install a double sided Cantilever Racking system complete with a canopy to predominantly store a range of timber packs from 3000mm up to 4800mm lengths. The position of the racking immediately helped to promote and raise the awareness to any passing trade potential, that Frank-Key were now holding significant stocks of timber.

Russell goes on to say “Stakapal’s unique boxed columns with slots on a 75mm fully adjustable pitch, provided us with the perfect solution, both in terms of durability and strength combined with ease of adjustability – it ticked all the boxes for us.”

These comments were only reinforced by the company’s Chairman whose immediate reaction at first site of the new installation was “It always pays to do the job properly.”

The expansion resulted in the necessity to embark upon better utilisation of their storage facility and improve upon selectivity of literally hundreds of different product lines and also increase the company’s efficiency with regards to stock rotation.

The company recognised that the existing method of storing both raw materials and finished goods within stillages was inefficient and costly in terms of damages and therefore Stakapal’s light duty Cantilever Racking was an ideal solution to the problem.

15 double sided runs of Stakapal’s light duty Cantilever Racking was installed within the two main operational area’s of the business. The runs consist of 5 columns no higher than two metres to ensure that all six arm levels per column side could be safely and easily loaded by Blyweert personnel.

Noel Harris, Blyweerts, Operations Manager had previously purchased Stakapal product and always preferred the system due to its superior design in terms of strength and flexibility. The adjustability of the 600mm long Cantilever arms with a very simple, strong and effective wedge pin enables arm adjustment in literally seconds, unlike the more traditional bolted varieties of Cantilever Racking that not only take a considerable amount of time to adjust but also have additional inherit maintenance implications that you do not get with the Stakapal system.

This project required Drive-In Pallet Racking with frame heights in excess of 6m and depths of over 8m deep. Each lane was designed to carry 8,000kgs per level giving the capacity for the storage of over 600 pallets.

A further 20 bays with Pallet Racking frame heights again in excess of 6m and with depths of 3m deep carrying 3,000kgs per level provided the capacity to store a further 200 pallets.

Stakapal’s SR2000 Series Drive – In Pallet Racking is ideally suited for cheese storage where batches of product are required to be stored for similar periods of time. Predominantly utilised for cold, chill and bulk storage it provides very high density whilst separating pallets prone to damage from crushing.
